I'd recommend WPG2, so far it has been useful and the developers are very responsive and active in support. My only complaint so far is that the other plugin they recommend to auto-manage roles isn't working, so auto assigning new users to also be gallery users doesn't work yet.

I haven't used it myself, but I have a couple of friends that recommend MediaMonkey if you're not a fan of iTunes. There are also other apps out there that can deal with the iPod file system. (I'm feeling lazy. Google: Oracle of the Internet™ should be able to help you find them easy enough if you're curious.)

The non-replaceable battery is another thing all together. You can send your iPod in for servicing to get the battery replaced if it becomes an issue - but personally, I haven't had any problems with mine. Granted, most of the time I'm listening to the iPod during my commute, so it's connected to an <a "href=http://www.griffintechnology.com/products/itripauto/" rel="nofollow">iTrip Auto and drawing power form my car. There are also a couple of after-market iPod battery/disk replacement places I've come across in my online wanderings. Again, consult the Oracle for guidance.
