Configuring Windows XP – Wheeeee!

So my soon-to-be parents in law bought a new computer last week. I was kind of hoping they wouldn’t get bitten by the upgrade bug untill after the wedding, my fianceé (I can never remember if that is supposed to be one “e” or two) and I were planning to buy one for them as a thank you gift.

Anyway, Jenny and I drove up to her parent’s house this weekend to work on wedding stuff – specifically invitations. I feel kind of bad, because I didn’t do any addressing myself. Instead I spent the afternoon installing and configuring their new system. I only hit 2 snags:

1) An impoperly installed printer driver — Easily fixed.
2) A severe case of allergies brought on by the dust and pet hair behind the computer desk — Not fixed, but now bareable.

This blog is being written from thier new machine. This seemed as good a place as any to verify that thier dial-up connection was properly configured. 🙂

Now it’s time to run windows update. I have a feeling that is going to take a while.

  1. Yes true – I had no major problems getting the thing set up. The printer driver issue was easily solved, (I just re-ran the printer software installer) and I’m used to dust related alergy attacks when I go crawling around behind computer desks.

The windows update took a few hours to complete, 47MB over 56k, but that went without a hitch. We went to a local bookstore and I bought a couple of “how to use XP” books for them — one as an early father’s day gift, and one as an early birthday gift.

Since I don’t run XP on any of my machines right now, I’m not going to be able to provide remote phone support — hopefully those books will help them get over the learning curve.

  2. Man…. i guess i’m going to have to throw XP on my system again.

My first trial run with it resulted in utter disaster and by an act of god, i was lucky enough to be able to burn my important information to CD before the whole OS tanked on me.

Maybe after i move i’ll do a fresh install of ME and proceed directly into a direct upgrade to XP… of course, this is only if i have broadband in the near future once i move, otherwise the inevitable driver download onslaught is unbearable to me 🙂

‘grats on getting engaged btw, not sure if i’ve chimed in on that fact before or not.

  3. I don’t know how somooth an upgrade will go, I was working with a “virgin” PC.

    Best of luck to you.

    And thanks! 🙂
