Configuring Windows XP – Wheeeee!

So my soon-to-be parents in law bought a new computer last week. I was kind of hoping they wouldn’t get bitten by the upgrade bug untill after the wedding, my fianceé (I can never remember if that is supposed to be one “e” or two) and I were planning to buy one for them as a thank you gift.

Anyway, Jenny and I drove up to her parent’s house this weekend to work on wedding stuff – specifically invitations. I feel kind of bad, because I didn’t do any addressing myself. Instead I spent the afternoon installing and configuring their new system. I only hit 2 snags:

1) An impoperly installed printer driver — Easily fixed.
2) A severe case of allergies brought on by the dust and pet hair behind the computer desk — Not fixed, but now bareable.

This blog is being written from thier new machine. This seemed as good a place as any to verify that thier dial-up connection was properly configured. 🙂

Now it’s time to run windows update. I have a feeling that is going to take a while.

I’ve finally done it. I’ve finally gotten off my duff and started teaching myself PHP. I bought a book on it several months ago, but hadn’t actually started using it until last night.

I think I just needed some motivation, in the form of a good starter project. Something more complex than spitting out “Hello World” or regurgitaing form input back at the user.

A friend of mine has this idea for her website which appears to be perfectly suited for PHP. It also has the added advantage of not being too terribly difficult to code, (I think,) and has room for some enhancements down the road.

I also have some ideas for more extensive PHP based projects for work – but those are a bit ambitious for me to tackle just yet. I need to learn what I’m doing first.

Anyway – I have a question for you other web developer types: Are there any PHP books you’d recommend? Also, since I plan to segue into more complex database driven web applictions at some point, (for the projects at work,) are there any MySQL books or resources I should look into?

(Gah. Has it really been a month since I wrote anything?)

I finally made it into the top 5 on the PJG UD team. Not that I will stay there that long. I recently lost a few of the machines that made up my UD farm.

Check out the stats page.

As of this writing, My UD account (BlueCanary) is ranked 3rd in CPU time and results returned, and 4th in Points generated.

I’m still crunching numbers, just not as fast as I once was.

Disaster!

I *just* dropped my Sidewinder and snapped the control shaft on it. I now have a joystick with working buttons, but no way to steer. That’ll teach me to try and carry everything up stairs at once instead of making 2 trips.

Bleh, no Jumpgate for me today – unless my friend upstairs isn’t using his JS.

Okay, so now that I’m in the market for a new joystick, what do you recommend? I’m looking for something preferably USB – any suggestions?
