Happy New Year

What I like about being a contractor:
Overtime.

What I don’t like about being a contractor:
Overtime.

That pretty much sums up my day. Not much of a new year’s post, but it’s all I can manage at the moment.

looks longingly at the door leading out of the building (and home) then resigns himself to entering the door that leads back to the lab

Hooray for the Internet Archive

Looking for the street address for a company that doesn’t exist anymore? (One you worked at as a contractor for six months almost 7 years ago?)

Try using the WayBack Machine: http://www.archive.org to search for the company’s contact info on an archived version of their site.

Too bad I wasn’t able to recover an old version of my resume I had posted online the same way.

Still Alive

Just wanted to let folks know I haven’t totally dropped off the face of the earth. the new job is keeping pretty busy – (over-time is both a good and a bad thing)

I’ve been really bad about keeping up with blogs. (Both my own, and others.) When I do get home, I usually don’t feel like sitting on the computer, and when I do sit on the computer – I’m more likely to fire up SWG than Firebird. (I reactivated my account last week.)

Nothing much new to report. Jenny, Boogie (my sister), and I will be heading to Alaska in a couple of weeks to go thhrough dad’s belongings and scatter ashes.

Anyway – my lunch break is almost over, so I best be headed back to the lab.

Edit: updating names for consistency

What exactly is a "Tape Monkey" anyway?

The official title for my position is: “Data Restoration Processor”

Basically, my job is to restore data from DLT Backup tapes, and get it ready to be processed. (How’s that for a redundant description?)

Being one of the new hires, I get the Fri/Sat/Sun/Mon from 05:00 to 16:00 shift. Which is going to wreack havoc on my circadian rhythm, not to mention the fact that I won’t be able to spend as much time with Jenny.

This situation should only last for a month or so, at which point I can (hopefully) get put on a different shift.

I went to work Tuesday to get set up with building and network access, and to start learning the processes I’ll be using. I’ve also been trying to adjust to a new sleeping schedule. We’ll see how that goes for real tomorrow morning when my alarm goes off at 4:00am.

Wheee!

(Looks like it’s about time to get dinner ready for Jenny, and then off to bed.)

can’t remember the last time he had a 20:00 bedtime

Follow-up interview

the follow-up went really well. I was basically told that the position was mine, they just needed to figure out which shift to put me on.

It’s basically an entry level tech job, and there are 2 teams a day shift and a swing shift. The swing shift more closely matches my current circadian rhythm, but the day shift would allow me to spend more time with my wife. I’m pushing for the day shift, and more importantly the guy who would be my supervisor on the day shift is as well.

Hopefully, I’ll hear back from them the HR people Monday.

Semi-Regular "I’m still here" Post.

Yep, I’m still here. Haven’t gone anywhere.

Things of note:
I think that job I alluded to in a previus entry has fallen through – havent’ heard anything from the company, and my contact isn’t returning my calls

As far as my old employer goes, I am no longer “Furloughed” – we have all been officially “let go”. (Still haven’t seen a final paycheck yet, probably won’t until September. And that’s being optomistic.)

We’ve also been informed that all of our medical benefits (including COBRA) will most likely be discontinued at the end of August. Bleh.

I’ve kinda sorta taken up photography. I’ve got about 6 rolls of film that I need to get developed – I hope a few of the pictures come out.

I’m enjoying SWG a great deal. Too bad I’ll have to cancel my account at the end of the month. 🙁

The content of hooloovoo.net will probably be replaced soon with a semi-professional portfolio site as I step up my job search efforts once again.

(The change mentioned above will not affect simpson.hooloovoo.net – or any other subdomain for that matter.)

Job Update…

It looks like I will be spending 25-30 hours a week getting paid to do something I like doing anyway. The exact numbers haven’t been hammered out yet, contract negotiations are next week.

I also got to go to the SF Zoo and play with my camera, and have dinner with my mom. I’d say today was a pretty good day.
