Check it out…

The first step in my eventual site redesign is to get a feature that I gave up on to finally work. That feature is the syndication of this blog. Basically I want a copy of my recent G-Blog entries to show up on a blog page on hoolooboo.net.

Using the XML feed, and trick I just found in an XML.com article, I’ve got it working. I just have a couple of layout quirks (caused by

tags) which will probably be solved when I get around to building new css files for the site.

Will be interesting to see that page linked to itself from this entry 🙂

Small Gallery Update

I got the following message from DreamHost yesterday:

[Quote] If you use Gallery on your website, you must upgrade it immediately to protect your website from being cracked into. The new version of Gallery was released on June 1, 2004 and all previous versions are insecure.

Download / Upgrade Instructions links omitted. -Hool

It only takes a few minutes and it is required for all users with an installation of Gallery. If you have any questions or need assistance, please contact our support team.

Doing a bit of research on the gallery site, I found that there are some other feature changes between my version of gallery and the newest version. I don’t really feel like upgrading right now, (but I will probably do so this weekend.) Digging a bit deeper into the site, I found that the security hole can be fixed by chaning one line of code. I just finished making said change in both galleries I’m currently hosting.

Tapestry – Your Favourite Comics by RSS

Found this via a link off a link off of Mark Pilgrim’s b-links (the rss version anyway) Since I closed the referring tab before I got to the page, I don’t remeber exactly where it came from. It was part of the discussion about silent data loss, IIRC.

[Quote] Tapestry is a series of RSS feeds for online comics. They help you keep up to date from within your favourite news aggregator, especially if you happen to miss a few days. [Quote]

2 of the 4 main comics I try to keep up with are supported, with the other 2 coming soon. There’s also quite a few others I’m planning to add to my list.

Another dirty spammer trick

Want a way to get around those pesky spam blockers people have set up on their email accounts?

You already know how to spoof the From: and Reply-To: fields right? Any spammer worth thier salt can do it in their sleep. So why not use the same address in those that you use in the To: field? That way when your spam message gets bounced by the target email server, it ends up in the target email box anyway.

I’ve started seeing the above strategy being used on one of my Earthlink addresses. (You know, the one I never use except on my resume, so it gets no legit mail unless I’m actively job-seeking.)

Spammers suck.

Guild Forum / Portal Software

I’ve been asked / volunteered to help set up and run a website for the Super Group I’ve joined in City of Heroes. (Chutta is currently running the group, if anyone cares.)

Anyway – I’m willing, and its not like I don’t have any experience with community sites. But it has been a while. Does anyone have any suggesstions for software? I’m imagining something similar to PHP-Nuke, but PHP-Nuke type sites tend to feel kludgy to me, as a user. (The notable exception was PlanetJumpgate.) I’ve got a valid vBulletin licence at my disposal, but somehow that seems over-kill for what we’re planning.

Basically what I’m going for is a basic guild news and information site with messageboards and possibly a group calander for scheduling events.

Any thoughts/sugestions for good (hopefully free) CMS software packages to look at?

Also – if anyone is playing CoH and is looking to join a Super Group, let me know.
