One more link, and then I’m really gone…

Here’s one for all you Stargate: SG1 fans…

SGC Dailing Program

I came across it when I was trying to find a screensaver that looked like the computer screens in the SGC when the gate is idle. The link above is the closest I found, and you can prevent random incoming wormholes by hitting the PGDWN key while the gate is inactive, effectively making it a screensaver (which you have to launch manually)

Kind of neat, even if the download is a pain in the a**

spam.la

I don’t know how many of the folks here are dreamhost subcribers, and out of those who are, I don’t know how many of you read the monthly newsletter they send out, but July’s announced a couple of new things.

one was www.spam.la — basically a public spam dumping ground. Whenever you need a throw away email address for some site registration, use whatever@spam.la Then go to http://www.spam.la and look for your confirmation email

Not going to work for everything, since many times you want to keep some info confidential, but it’s an interesting idea. I used it to verify that my phone numbers had infact been added to the new National Do Not Call Registry here in the states.

Just helping to get the word out. You don’t need to be a dreamhost subscriber to use spam.la, but if you’re looking for a good web hosting service (with all sorts of other neat extras) be sure to give dreamhost a look-see.

(yes that’s a plug *grin*)

The Matrix Reloaded: The Abridged Script

I just found this link on Simon Willison’s web log. (I’m slowly getting caught up on the blogs I follow.) Don’t visit the link unless you’ve seen the movie, there are a few spoilers, and you might not catch all the humor.

(I especially liked the conversation at the end between Keanu Reeves and “The Explainer”. The IRC bit was fun, too.)

Order of the Phoenix

While I’m here, trying to get caught up on some of the blogs I used to read on a daily basis, my wife is in the other room reading the new Harry Potter book.

The continuous clicking of the clock above the computer, and my occasional typing followed by silence as I read is currently being supplemented by bursts of laugher coming from the other room. Perhaps I should take some time to get caught up on the series so I can find out what’s so funny.

One reading project at a time, I’m still trying to catch up on my blogs.

Dum da dum dum…

I just read a series of articles on the online version of the Independant Weekely, a newspaper out of Durham, NC

The stories (linked below in chronological order) relate the tale of a High School student who was questioned by 2 law enforcement officers about a suspected hacking incident at Chapel Hill High School.

Looks like a couple laws were broken, but not the ones you might think.

“The FBI has been reading my diary” –May 28, 2003
“Silly cops!” –June 4, 2003
Faking It –June 11, 2003

I’m looking forward to reading any followups on the story.

I guess there’s two morals to this story:

  1. Be careful what you write in your blog, some people might not be hip to your pop-culture references.
  2. Don’t be an idiot and go breaking fedral laws during an investigation.

"Vertigo" Then and Now

I found this link during my morning blogrun (which happes just after my morning comicrun)

Originally found in Jeffery Zeldman’s Daily Report, I give you “Vertigo” Then and Now: Before and after images of San Francisco locations used in Hitchcock’s 1958 film masterpiece.

Considering I live and work near San Fancisco, and I recognize a few of these ladnmarks, (I don’t spend nearly as much time in The City as I probably should.) I think it’s really neat comparing stills from the movie with photos of thier present-day equivalents.

Mozilla Firebird 0.6

That’s what I get for spending a few days off-line, Mozilla Firebird 0.6 was released last Saturday.

I’ve completed the download, and I’ll be running the installer just as soon as I’m done writing this, and I finish reading the other tabs I’ve got open.

wonders if it’s about time to check out thunderbird as well…

I think I’ll wait for at least one more build before I really take a look at that.
