Quick question for simpsone and frostedlexicharm

How would you prefer that I refer to the two of you and your son in my blog and comments?

First Names? Pseudonyms? Something else?

I’ve pretty much been using Eric, Lexi, and E. (or Eli) – let me know if something else would be more appropriate. I want to try to keep things consistant – so I’ll go back through my blog entries and make changes if needed.

(BTW: “Hooloovoo” or “Hool” is how most the people here know me. Either of those is fine)

It Has Begun

As I was driving home from work today listening to the traffic station, a CBS news special report broke in. While speaking with a correspondant in Baghdad, several large explosions were heard. It seems that US led forces, acting on intel obtained by the CIA earlier today, launched several cruise missles at a “target of opportunity” within the city.

I just finished listening to the President’s address, and I’m turning off the television now. I’m not terribly interested in listening to reporters, news anchors, and special correspondants speculate about what is going on, what or who was just hit, and when a full scale attack will be launched.

I honestly don’t know whether or not this war is needed. I do wish that it had not come to this. I am saddend when I think about the loss of life that is about to occur (or already has occured) on both sides of this conflict.

Note to Self:

Braking suddenly on a new mountain bike (complete with suspension system) to avoid a collision with an elderly gentleman and his dog who just became visible around the curve at the bottom of the hill is not advisable. Attempting said manouver at 25-30mph will result in being thrown head-first over the front of your handle-bars.

(At least I didn’t run down that old dude and his dog.)

And yes, I’m fine, just a few scrapes and bruises, and the need of a new helmet… learning how to take a fall in high-school wrestling probably protected me as much as that helmet did.

So, how was your Saturday?

Echoes of the Web Team

Way back in 2001, I worked with a team of web development types. Collectively, we were the “Web Team”. Then, there were several rounds of lay-offs, finally leaving me pretty much by myself in April, 2002

Anyway, we used to have this whiteboard whic began collecting wierd little quips or statements made by one team member or the other. As the board got filled up, older things were removed to make room for new out-of-context gems. Below is a list I just found while doing a a bit of cleaning. It’s scrawled on an old legal pad in my handwriting. The heading at the top says: “Echoes of the Web Team” and contains what was left on the board after everyone else got layed off:

Some days, I really miss working with those guys.

03.03.03

I had to run the rent check orver to our landlords this morning. When I wrote it out, I noticed how cool the date was. Just think, 9 more years where this will happen, (the same 2 digits for day-month-year,) and then we have to wait until 2101.

I just thought it was neat.

A Little Early-Morning Beauty for Everyone

Or in this case, a little late-afternoon beauty.

What you see above is a photo of a sunset in Colorado very near to where my grand-aunt used to live. She sent copies of this photo out several years ago. My copy has a couple of spots of water-damage, and some scratches from living in a box for the last few years. Thanks to the magic of PhotoShop, those flaws are much less appearant in the scan you see above. 🙂

Look Ma, no Windows!

So, I had to go buy a PC serial cable to hook up an external 56k modem salvaged from the bottom of my “obsolete” hardware box. (That would be all the crap from old computers I’ve never recycled or thrown out.)

A few clicks around in the network configuration tool, and I have established a dialup connection on the Linux side of my dual-boot system. I’m feeling quite proud of myself. 🙂

Now I just have to figure out what I want to do next…

Diving back into linux…

I have a passing familiarity with linux. I kind of have to, seeing as how most of the web sites I maintain (both work and personal) are hosted on linux boxes. I want to learn a lot more. I’ve played around with a couple different distributions over the last few years. hooloovoo.net started life as an old HP vectra funning FreeBSD. (That box, minus the HD, has been riding around in the trunk of my car since 1999 – I wonder if anything on it still works…)

I got ahold of a copy of RedHat 8.0 last night. I stuck the 4gig HD from the old FreeBSD system into my current PC and set up a dual-boot Win98/RH8.0 machine. The setup went smoothly, and I think I’ll have a lot of fun mucking about in this version of RH, but I won’t be able to do anything “useful” until I get an internet connection working.

I know that my internal modem is a winModem, and while I might be able to get it working, it’s probably going to be a pain in the ass. I’be been poking around a bit online, and I think I have a couple of solutions, but I need to double-check the modem’s chipset to make sure I’m grabbing the correct RPMs and such.

I’m almost tempted not to bother, and just dig out an old 56k external modem and be done with it. Or convince my wife we really do need broadband. 🙂
