It’s basically done.

Except for a couple of funky IE rendering quirks that I’m looking at, hlvdn_blues is pretty much ready to go.

So, ah what should I call it?

hlvdn_blues
hool_blues
House of Blues
Something Else?

I am planning to create some variations, and I’d like to keep a consistent naming scheme. Any suggestions?

Before I forget – here’s the screenshot:

It’s getting closer.

So, here is the latest installment of the GLUE theme I’m working on. The next piece I need to deal with is the side-bar. I’m going to break it up into several boxes, (as it is on my site) and I need to play with the section headers a bit. Other than that, it looks like I just have a bunch of little tweaks to make.

Also of note: I’ve given up on making IE behave with well with a table-less layout for now. I figure a certain amount of arrogance when it comes to how I think the web “should” be built is fine on my site, but these themes really need to look “right” on as many browsers as possible.

I have tried to keep the use of tables for layout to a minimum – but at least IE isn’t mangling the layout too much anymore.

Edit: it’s still a silly acronym… :p

Okay, so I like have this GLUE theme, right? And it’s like, totally based on my website and stuff.

Well, see – I’m like trying to do the layout without resorting to tables – cuz I totally did it that way on my site, but – like, I might have to, you know, NOT do it that way, since we need these things to look good in IE and stuff. Unless I can, like, totally find a killer way to make it work, I’ll like, end up putting the left and right columns into a table so we don’t end up with those totaly bogus margin problems in IE. You know, I can be like totaly – “what-ever dude” about it on my own site, but not here and stuff.

So anyway – here’s the first rough GLUE theme based on hooloovoo.net, but I still have a lot of work to do on it. The screen shot was taken with Mozilla.

Edit: I pulled the screenshots down, since the theme is now part of GLUE 1.0 RC1

(You don’t even want to see how IE mangles it.)

Okay, check this out. I found it on User Friendly’s LotD

Here’s an excerpt from the page:

[Quote] The Wooden Mirror project is an art installation, and as such the goals leading to its creation are a bit vague. The piece explores the line between analog and digital. In the essence of the piece is the notion of inflicting digital order on a material that is as analog as it gets — wood. [Quote]

So I’m the latest GLUE design/test monkey. (I was just a test monkey before.)

After a few hours spent trying to get Jabber to work, (with moderate success – I was able to chat with Gossip a bit,) I’ve just started playing with a GLUE theme.

I’m also going take a look at the templates and see how much I can screw with the basic layout. This should be fun.

Bleargh

I just was working on a gallery page for the rafting photos. I was testing the javascript out when I closed the page in the editor without saving. I hate it when I do stupid stuff like that.

I suddenly don’t feel like working on it anymore. I think I’ll go make dinner now. Avocado and chicken quesadillas – yum.

Leave it to Penny Arcade to, well – just go read it, I found it funny.

For a long time I’ve considered myself a Mac User stuck in a PC User’s body. When I was younger, the first computer in my home was a Macintosh Perfoma. (Well, actually it was a Commodore 64, followed by a Solaris PC clone of some sort, but the first computer I used to actually DO things with, like write reports and go online and such was a Mac.) And my High School Graduation presont was a Mac Powerbook.

When I spent WAY too much money on a Graphic Artist program at some trade school, we were on Macs. When I got my first REAL job in the computer industry, I had to start using PCs. (Thank god my roommate at the time had a Windows box.) The fact that most of the programs I was using on a daily basis work pretty much the same on PC as Mac (PhotoShop, Illustrator, etc) made the switch relativly painless. Because of this, the first computer I bought after I moved out of my parent’s house was a PC.

I now use a PC predominatly, (both at work and at home,) but I do have an iMac at work for testing purposes.

I’d like to have a Mac at home – as a second computer, (and a linux box as a third,) but I do so many more things with my PC, (not the least of which is play games,) that I wouldn’t want to switch over to one permanently. I want to use both, (or rather all three PC/Mac/Linux) each for it’s particular strengths.

I don’t understand why so many people feel it HAS to be one or the other.

w00t – sorta

The “Dell Certified” tech guy just called me. My part is in, and I just set up an appointment for between 3 and 5 pm today. (That would be GMT 22:00 and GMT 24:00 – I think)

That’s the “w00t” — here’s the “sorta”

He thinks the replacement board is exactly the same as what’s in the machine now – AGP 1.0 and all. I knew that was a possiblity, but I was hoping it’d be 2.0 compliant.

He didn’t sound too sure, so I’ll get the machine up and running with the old card, and then see if I can find a diagnostic utility that can tell me if the slot is AGP 1.0 or 2.0 compliant.

At least my machine will be back up and running.

update:

My system is now back up and runnning. Time to find out if this new board is AGP 2.0 compliant.

Well, Crap

Bioware does not support 3DFX cards with Neverwinter Nights. I figured that would be a problem, since I still have a 16mb Voodoo 3 – but I decided to try it anyway. No go. Very bizzare display problems, couldn’t even navigate the menus to get into the game.

Fine – no problem, I’ll just go out and buy a new nVidia card. I’ve been meaning to do that for a while, now’s as good a time as any.

So I head out to my local Best Buy and pick up a GeForce4 TI 4200, (the 4400s were out of stock and the 4600’s are a bit expensive.)

I get home, (well, upstairs – where the computer is right now,) and begin to install my nifty new piece of technology.

Meanwhile, my friend has created a dwarven warrior and is happly plunkng away at all manner of wonderful creatures.

I install the card and boot the machine, only to be greeted with 2 beeps and a Dell spash screen. The computer has failed it’s POST. No problem, I’ll just put the voodoo3 card back in. Reboot – 2 beeps and a splash screen.

Son of a…

Paul’s got a second machine with net access, (he likes to play EQ A LOT,) so I hop on Dell’s website to try and figure out what’s wrong. Pouring through the tech support site, I find out that the double beep indicates a video card problem, (gee, you think?) I pull the card out and re-seat it as suggested. No go.

Hmm, what’s this about POST LED dispays? Oh look – 3 greens and a yellow – “This configuration of lights indicates some other problem with your system, please contact Dell customer support at…”

I’ve begun to suspect that my system, purchased in late 2000, is only AGP 1.0 compliant.

I get on the phone with tech support, explain my problem, and the steps I’ve already tried. The lady was very nice and tries to tell me that since it’s a 3rd party card, I need to go back to Best Buy for help.

Not so fast lady, the problem is also occuring with the original card now.

“Oh, well the new card must have done something to the bios when you installed it…”

“I can’t even get AT the bios config right now.”

“Okay. Well, reboot and when you see the splash screen – hit F2”

(I’ve aleady tried this – but okay, computers are notorius for working again once you’ve called tech support.)

“No go – the bios screen doesn’t come up.”

She asks about the double beep and the POST led indicators again, puts me on hold for a couple of minutes, and then comes back. She asks me to go through the system and re-seat everything on the motherboard, RAM, video card, modem, ethernet, sound…

So I begin. I tell her I’m going to put he phone down for a minute while I do that. I disconnect and reconnect everything, then pick up the phone again… and I hear a dial tone.

Duh Robert, the phone was connected to the computer thru the modem… when you unplugged it, you basically hung up on the tech.

So I call back. Igeta different person, but he’s able to access my support ticket. (yea CRM) I briefly explain the problem again, and the steps taken. He has me reboot again, this time hitting F8. Still nothing, so askes me to verify the POST LEDs one more time. (Still 3 greens and a yellow.)

This new tech thinks there is a problem with the motherboard, since my machine is still under warranty, he will be able to order a new MoBo, and send a tech out to install it. I should be getting a call in a few days from the service rep to set up an appointment.

Paul was nice enough to let me start a game on his computer last night. After I got off the phone with Dell. I got through the training/prelude before going to bed. So far the game is sweet.

This morning, I took another look at the Dell website, trying to find out the exact specs of my machine. I didn’t have any luck finding out last night, but today — yep that’s an AGP 1.0 compliant slot.

Long story short, my PC is hosed, and won’t get fixed for a few days. But at least the techs were somewhat helpful. I’ve barely gotten into NWN, but what I did see so far was nice. I’m looking forward to playing with the world builder tools.

I’m hoping that the new MoBo will have AGP 2.0, (I doubt they STILL have hardware from 2000 laying around.) I’ll be sure to double-check before installing my card again.
