Flame Warriors

One of the moderators on another forum pointed this link out to me claiming it described the forum’s users perfectly. It’s a collection of characatures of many of the personalities one is likely to encounter online.

I’ve seen many of these archetypes myself. On mailing lists, on message boards, on community blog sites…

I said this weekend, but then I got bored.

Lexi, you may be interested in this link: http://simpson.hooloovoo.net

(If you want to see what it’s going to look like, check out http://gallery.belknap-family.net Same software, different content. And you’ll be able to upload new images yourself 🙂

Update: After banging my head against some poorly written error codes, I finally got the software installed on the site, and set up a test gallery. I just got off the phone with Eric, who is now in posession of login information for the two of you.

See what happens when a computer geek’s wife gets off work late? Instead of cooking dinner, he plays with server configurations. 🙂

Okay back to dinner cooking for me – seafood and veggies in peanut sauce over noodles. Kinda of a half italian – half thai – half leftovers kind of thing. Wait… that’s 1½ of a dinner – I need 2… Oh, I forgot about the salad. There, that’s better. 🙂

www.bash.org

I was just reading through the recent entries in the bash.org IRC quote database, when I cam across this little gem about the movie “The Usual Suspects” – it contains a spoiler about the movie, so I’ve taken the appropriate percautions.

Morwen K: i’d invite myself along but i’m sure this is your together-time, so i won’t intrude 😉
Morwen K: plus i’d probably blurt out “it’s kevin spacey!!!” like halfway through
EchelonOverlord: What?! Kevin Spacey?!!

Found Magazine

we collect FOUND stuff: love letters, birthday cards, kids’ homework, to-do lists, ticket stubs, poetry on napkins, doodles- anything that gives a glimpse into someone else’s life. anything goes.

we certainly didn’t invent the idea of found stuff being cool. every time we visit our friends in other towns, someone’s always got some kinda unbelievable found note or photo on their fridge. we wanted to make a magazine so that everyone can check out all the strange, hilarious and heartbreaking things people have picked up.

A Little Early-Morning Beauty for Everyone

Or in this case, a little late-afternoon beauty.

What you see above is a photo of a sunset in Colorado very near to where my grand-aunt used to live. She sent copies of this photo out several years ago. My copy has a couple of spots of water-damage, and some scratches from living in a box for the last few years. Thanks to the magic of PhotoShop, those flaws are much less appearant in the scan you see above. 🙂

Almost

I wonder how many spammers clean their databases and remove addresses that bounce.

I wonder if a week worth of bouncing mail will cut down on the amount of spam I receive.

After no response from my attempts to deal with Network Solution’s web based system, I resorted to calling them today. My registration has finally been renewed, but you’ll have to wait another 24-72 hors hours for the changes to propagate across the DNS system. (This I know, it’s why I waited ’til Wednesday to call.)

Customer support lady surprised me by being very nice and actually rather helpful. (I’ve had some bad experiences with them in the past.) I almost feel guilty about the fact that I’m moving everything to a different registrar, and the only reason I reactivated with netsol is because the domain name can’t be expired if I want to transfer it.

Almost…

Still at Work

But I ‘m not working. 🙂

I just finished setting up Gallery on what will hopefully be a family website. I’ve go a couple of test albums up right now, (yes the kittens again) I’ll be adding a few more images over the next few days.

If anyone wants to check it out, clicky clicky. 🙂

The setup could have been easier – the documentation is a bit sparse, and I had to deal with some funky dreamhost configuration stuff. (If you are a dreamhost user and want to run gallery, make sure to check out the php-security entry in thier kbase.) I think I may blog an install guide with some caveats you should be aware of.)

One of the cools things Iearned is that the Gallery Remote java app works through my company’s firewall.

On a side note, Gallery might be an interesting thing to try to hook into GLUE (of vice-versa) – not that I have the time (or expertise) to attempt such a project right now. I’m just saying it’d be neat to have someday. 🙂

Jeez, its 20:40 – I need to get out of here.
